February 16 - March 3, 2018
PAL Studio Theatre (581 Cardero Street), Downtown Vancouver
"Pacific Overtures'' is a one-of-a-kind experiment in the annals of the musical theatre." - New York Times
Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman mix elements of Kabuki theatre with the convention of the Broadway musical in Pacific Overtures, a highly original, inventive, powerful, educational and surprisingly humourous theatrical experience. Commodore Matthew Perry's 1853 mission to open trade relations with isolationist Japan through gunboat diplomacy forges and unlikely friendship between the samurai Kayama and the Americanized fisherman Manjiro. Kayama and Manjiro – and all of Japanese society – must face the wave of Westernization that follows.
Pacific Overtures stars Thomas Chan, Brandon Chow, Tracy Dam, Carlo Fortin, Chelsea Huang, Jason Lam, Henry Lee, Ashley Park, Wynn Siu, Veronica Ung, Alina Wong and Carlo Yu. Directed by Ryan Mooney with Music Direction by Kerry O'Donovan. Stage Management by Cailin Taverner, Set Design by Sandy Margaret, Lighting Design by Andie Lloyd and Costume Design by Kelsey Cunningham.
